December 1999 marked a new chapter in the history of cult brands C.P. Company and Stone Island with the opening of the first dedicated store in the UK on Beak Street in London's Soho. C.P Company and Stone Island have shared retail space for over 10 years, however since C.P Company's take over by FGF in Feburary 2010 the final season for both brands sharing retail space is Spring Summer 2011.
Over the last ten years no other brand has had a more profound effect on the menswear market in terms of fabric innovation and covetability, making Stone Island one of the most emulated labels.
The store's revolutionary design concept, incorporating digital art, structural glass walkways, magnetic walls supporting steel shelving, glowing fibreglass light sabres housed in a grid of steel sockets imbedded in concrete floors - looks set to move the boundary of future shop design.
There is only one other Stone Island flagship store in the world, situated in Milan and trading since September 1999; a smaller, prototype Stone Island store opened in St Tropez in April 1999. The London store showcases the best of the collections and its opening represented a milestone in the labels' popularity in the UK.
This groundbreaking retail project is a partnership between Sportswear Company (SPW), the Italian company that owns, produces and distributes Stone Island worldwide, together with Four Marketing, the UK distributors of the label.
The concept was driven by SPW to continue the growth of its label worldwide and was developed and engineered by the German Industrial design studio Zeichenweg TM. This unique concept named Item/Unit is consistent to all three stores. For the London Store Four Marketing appointed UK based architects Wells Mackereth who took the Item/Unit concept and applied it to a Soho location. London's Soho was chosen as the UK site for its progressive, edgy environment, which was considered appropriate for the label.
At approximately 2000 square feet the double fronted store covers two floors.
